Where Can I Charge My EV in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa?

Where Can I Charge My EV in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining momentum in South Africa — and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is no exception! Whether you’re driving around Durban, heading inland to Pietermaritzburg, exploring the Midlands, or taking long trips along the N3, there are more ways than ever to charge your EV in KZN.

Public Charging Stations in KZN

KwaZulu-Natal currently has a growing network of public charging stations, including both AC (medium speed) and DC (fast) chargers. While historically fewer in number than Gauteng or the Western Cape, KZN still offers good coverage around major cities and key travel routes, with around 14 AC and 14 DC chargers recorded in recent counts.

Here’s where you’ll typically find them:

On Major Routes

  • N3 Highway (Durban–Johannesburg) — there are DC fast chargers near the Tugela Toll areas that help make long-distance travel easier and quicker.

  • New ultra-fast and off-grid solar-powered charging stations are being planned along the N3 to support more reliable charging between Durban and inland destinations in coming years.

Urban & Shopping Destinations

Charging stations are popping up in key urban centres and popular spots, such as:

  • Galleria Mall (Amanzimtoti) – fast charger ready for public use.

  • Watercrest Mall (Durban) – public charging bays available.

  • Midlands Mall (Pietermaritzburg) – EV chargers you can use while you shop or work.

  • Audi Umhlanga – EV charger at a dealer location in Umhlanga Ridge.
(Note: operational status can change, so check before you go.)

These sites often include DC fast chargers (50kW-100kW+) which can give you a significant battery boost in 30–60 minutes — perfect for stops during longer journeys.

How to Find Charging Stations

Because the EV charging landscape is still expanding, it’s helpful to use live maps and apps to locate working stations and see what types they offer. Some of the best tools include:

  • GridCars & ChargePocket – these are the backbone of South Africa’s public network and will show live locations and availability.

  • PlugShare or AutoTrader’s EV map – great for plotting chargers along your route or near your destinations.

  • Your EV’s built-in navigation system – many EVs can guide you to the next charger with charging station details.

Tip: Always bring your own charging cable for AC stations — many sites don’t provide one. And because public charging costs more than home charging, try to plan stops when you’re already doing other activities like shopping or grabbing a bite.

Don’t Forget Home Charging

For most EV owners in KZN, home charging remains the most convenient option. Plug in overnight and wake up with a “full tank” every morning — ideal for daily commuting. But public charging stations are there when you take road trips or need a top-up away from home.
